My personal thoughts are that the bad guys got scared and started throwing out many of these impossible stories as a curtain to hide their evil behind. I don't think they were expecting their evil to be so readily torn apart and exposed by the truther movement. I think they got scared and started throwing out false leads to create mass confusion.
