The only symptoms would be that the infected person would lose all empathy and became obsessed with accumulating wealth and power. Therefore, the people who were not infected had no way of knowing that their leaders and their rich friends were infected. The ants are very adaptable and have no need to keep the earth livable for their hosts. Those who are not infected don't suspect what has happened until the ants have put the entire species on the verge of extinction. A few of the people who are not infected begin to suspect that something is very wrong. But the idea of ants infecting and controlling their leaders is too far fetched for the uninfected to entertain the idea that these ants could exist. How do the uninfected wake up their uninfected friends and save their world? Sometimes it feels like this is just how bizarre our world is.
